Riley Connection:  Grew up in Manhattan at 520 Nth 3rd St.  Just before the war he lived off of Route 3 near Zeandale, Kansas.

 

Date of Death (and Age):  June 20, 1941 (age 19)

 

Place of Death:  Lost at sea when submarine sank in the North Atlantic near Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

 

Grave Location:  His body was not recovered.

 

Bio:  Marvin lost his life when the submarine he served on sank in the North Atlantic, with all hands lost. The June 23, 1941 edition of The Manhattan Mercury notes, “The Navy today abandoned all efforts to rescue the bodies of the crew. They will make their graves at their ‘stations of duty.’” Marvin’s name is included on the memorial at Deep Creek School.
